Throat Foreign Body Removal
What is throat foreign body removal?
Throat foreign body removal refers to the medical procedure of extracting objects or substances that have become lodged in the throat. These foreign bodies can vary widely, ranging from small food particles to larger objects like toys or even fish bones. The procedure is typically performed by an Otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) like Dr Ashton Boggenpoel.
Why is throat foreign body removal important?
Throat foreign body removal is crucial for several reasons:
- Preventing complications: Foreign bodies in the throat can lead to various complications such as choking, difficulty breathing, and damage to the throat tissue. Prompt removal is essential to prevent these complications from escalating.
- Relieving discomfort: Having a foreign object stuck in the throat can cause significant discomfort, pain, and difficulty swallowing. Removal of the foreign body alleviates these symptoms and restores normal function.
- Preventing infection: In some cases, foreign bodies in the throat can cause irritation and inflammation, increasing the risk of infection. Removing the foreign body reduces the likelihood of infection and associated complications.
- Ensuring proper healing: Once the foreign body is removed, the throat can heal properly without the impediment of the object, minimizing the risk of long-term complications.
How does Dr Boggenpoel perform throat foreign body removal?
By employing an endoscope, a slender, flexible tube equipped with a camera, he can visually inspect the foreign object and pinpoint its precise location within the throat.
Depending on the size and type of the foreign body, he may use specialized instruments such as forceps or graspers to carefully grasp and remove the object from the throat. In some cases, he may use suction to remove smaller or loose foreign bodies from the throat.
To ensure patient comfort during the procedure, he may administer local anaesthesia to numb the throat area before performing the removal. After the foreign body is successfully removed, he provides appropriate post-procedural care instructions to promote healing and prevent recurrence.
